The Enterprise takes young heiress Salia and maid Anya from planet Kladvia III to Daled IV where Salia is supposed to become the new leader. Anya takes care that contact to members of the starship remains as limited as possible, but the young lady feels lonesome and becomes curious of what happens on board. Casually she meets Ensign Wesley Crusher who is on his way to get a device from cargo hold. Both start to like each other immediately and become friends despite Salia's ban to leave the quarter. Wesley shows her how the replicator works, visiting of distant worlds on holodeck and tasty chocolate mousse in bar "ten forward". He doesn't sense that the humanly appearing guests are shapeshifting alassomorphs.

Alassomorphs are shapeshifters who may change their outward appearance to different forms. Their natural being is a bright shining entity. Because of their mysterious existence and isolation the creatures aren't well known by starfleet.
